Why Steady Numbers Matter After 50

High blood pressure and high blood sugar rarely hurt. That's what makes them easy to ignore, and why they're worth keeping an eye on.

Heart disease and stroke are among the leading causes of death in the US. High blood pressure and high blood sugar are both major risk factors, and both can go unnoticed for years.

Blood pressure
48%

of US adults have high blood pressure. Only about 1 in 4 of them has it under control.

When it stays high, your heart and blood vessels have to work harder, every single day.

Over the years, it raises the risk of
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
Blood sugar
52%

of US adults 65 and older have prediabetes: blood sugar that's higher than it should be.

When it stays high, it slowly damages blood vessels throughout the body.

Over the years, it raises the risk of
  • Heart disease
  • Vision loss
  • Kidney disease

Where Ceylon cinnamon fits in

Ceylon cinnamon supports healthy, steady blood sugar and blood pressure levels.* The research on cinnamon is promising but still early: the studies are small and short, and most of them used cassia, not Ceylon.

So we see it as support, not a fix. One softgel a day, next to the things that matter most: moving, eating well, and checking your numbers with your doctor. If you take medication for blood sugar or blood pressure, talk to your doctor before you start.

And if you take cinnamon every day for years, the type matters. Cassia is high in coumarin, Ceylon is naturally low. That's why a published coumarin number is one of our eight criteria.

Our Final Take: Ceylance Is the One We'd Pick

All four brands sell a decent Ceylon extract. If a 90-day guarantee matters most to you, Metabolae and Meridional are worth a look. But if you plan to take it every day for years, Ceylance gives you the most for your money: the lowest monthly price, the only published coumarin number, and a source you can actually trace.

Key Questions, Answered

Isn't all cinnamon the same?

No. There are two main types. Cassia is the most common cinnamon sold in North America, according to the NIH, and it can contain a lot of coumarin. Ceylon (Cinnamomum verum, "true cinnamon") comes from Sri Lanka and contains only trace amounts. In lab tests by Austria's food safety agency AGES, cassia contained up to 3,260 mg of coumarin per kg, Ceylon at most 185 mg. All four softgels in this comparison use true Ceylon; where they differ is price, transparency and the guarantee.

Is Ceylon cinnamon safe to take every day?

Ceylon is the type to choose if you take cinnamon every day. The concern with daily cinnamon is coumarin, which can affect the liver at high intakes. Cassia can contain a lot of it; one teaspoon can already go over the daily limit set by European food safety authorities. Ceylon contains only trace amounts, so it stays far below that limit. As with any supplement, some people get an upset stomach or an allergic reaction, and if you're pregnant or take medication, check with your doctor first.

What is coumarin, and how much is too much?

Coumarin is a natural compound in cinnamon that can affect the liver in sensitive people at high intakes. European food safety authorities (EFSA and Germany's BfR) set the tolerable daily intake at 0.1 mg per kg of body weight: about 7 mg a day for someone weighing 155 lbs. One teaspoon of cassia can already go over that. Ceylon contains far less, which is why a coumarin number per softgel is worth looking for.

Can cinnamon interact with my medication?

It can. Cinnamon may add to the effect of medication that lowers blood sugar, which could make it drop too low. If you take medication for blood sugar or blood pressure, a blood thinner, or anything that affects your liver, check with your doctor or pharmacist first. That goes for all four brands.

Who should skip it or ask a doctor first?

Skip it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding: the NIH considers larger amounts of Ceylon cinnamon unsafe during pregnancy. Ask your doctor first if you have liver problems, take medication every day, or are allergic to cinnamon.

Does cinnamon actually help with blood sugar or blood pressure?

Research points that way. In a 2013 review of 10 clinical trials (Annals of Family Medicine), cinnamon was linked to lower fasting blood sugar in adults with raised blood sugar. A separate 2013 review found blood pressure dropped by about 5 points (systolic). That's why Ceylon cinnamon is taken to support healthy, steady blood sugar and blood pressure levels.* Results vary from person to person, and it works best next to moving, eating well and regular check-ups. It doesn't replace medication.

Which one is cheapest?

Per month on the best plan each brand offers: Ceylance ($14.99), Metabolae ($18.00), Nurtura ($20.99) and Meridional ($34.90). For one single pouch bought one-time, Metabolae is cheaper than Ceylance.

Which has the best guarantee?

Metabolae and Meridional offer 90 days. Ceylance and Nurtura offer 60 days.
